Goodness Me is marking its 30th anniversary with an ambitious expansion plan.

Janet Jacks started the natural food market store in 1981 at a small location on Upper Wentworth and Fennell. She did so because she was frustrated by the challenge of finding healthy, nutritional food for her family. She had more than a passing interest in the issue. She had recently witnessed the death of her father-in-law from complications of diabetes and her young husband was newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (when the pancreas stops making insulin).

“I needed to do what I could do,” she said.

At that point she had three small children and was determined to find a way to prevent them from developing the disease.

That perseverance paid off. Not only did the original store flourish, it was repeatedly forced to expand until it moved to the current location on Upper Gage.

Then, a smaller store opened on Locke Street in 2005, then one in Burlington and most recently in January in Waterdown.
